Abstract

In 1929, Sigmund Freud wrote the book "Civilization and Its Discontents," which was published the following year. The book explores the relationship between the individual and society, seeking to understand the origin and psychological implications of life in society. Thus, it brings the reader content related to the realm of human emotions and the functioning of the human mind. The text delves into the concept of "discontents," understood as a persistent dissatisfaction that accompanies the human condition. It analyzes the tensions between individual drives and the demands imposed by communal living, arguing that civilization requires a renunciation of instinctual drives and a constant balance between frustration and pleasure. The text is divided into eight sections where the author poses a range of questions and answers about some issues related to our own intra and interpersonal relationships. Throughout the article, Freud discusses the nature of culture, investigating questions such as the relationship between civilization and human aggression, the influence of the Oedipus complex on social organization, religion, and the inherent impossibility of a life without suffering. It is important to mention that "Civilization and Its Discontents" is marked by Freud's perspicacity and his characteristically refined language. Through his psychoanalytic analysis, he will comprehend the complexities of the human psyche and offer profound insights into the condition of man in modern society. With its undeniable importance in the fields of psychology and sociology, Freud's article is essential reading for those interested in exploring Freudian theories about human nature and society. "Civilization and Its Discontents" remains a milestone in understanding the psychodynamics and inherent contradictions in the experience of living in society.
